Any move as such can be difficult especially at that age, however they adapted quite well and loved the social aspect of the Italo / Australian culture and got to re kindle old friendships of 'paesani' who had migrated here in the 50's.
This recipe is quite fail proof, and I found the added pinch of salt may have something to do with it. I also made a small sponge cake using the same recipe. Let me know how you go. xtheheirloomchroniclesblogspothttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06366104052226847236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6197594656738883330.post-25182506279392525102016-10-26T01:05:21.013+11:002016-10-26T01:05:21.013+11:00Oh, Carmen I so enjoyed reading your story. As a non Italian who enjoys all things Italian and have been trying to learn the language for the last two years, find that I have
learnt a bit of your culture from this post of yours. It must have been difficult for them to move to Australia after the earthquake but the silver lining I guess was that you got to known them and their traditions better. I didn't know about so many of these rituals and symbolic foods from Basilicata. As part of my cooking course we're learning techniques for making pan di spagna (basically savoiardi in cake form). I'll use your recipe to practice at home (I'm notorious for having a heavy hand and not 'folding gently').
